When to go, and how long to stay

April to early June and September to October are the kindest months: mild weather, long light, the Bosphorus calm enough for an open-deck crossing. July and August are hot and heavily visited. Winter is cold and often wet, with rain against the dome of every courtyard you cross, but the monuments are quiet and the city feels like itself.

Four nights is the minimum that does not feel clipped. Six or seven lets you add the Asian shore, the islands, and a morning with nothing in it. Istanbul also pairs naturally with Cappadocia or the Aegean coast if you have ten nights or more.

One practical note: mosques close to visitors during the five daily prayer times and for Friday midday prayers. Shoulders and knees stay covered, women cover their hair, and shoes come off at the door.

Getting in

Istanbul has two airports. Istanbul Airport (IST) sits on the European side, around an hour by road from the old city in ordinary conditions, longer in rush-hour congestion. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and usually suits travelers heading for Kadıköy or the islands first.

Entry rules depend entirely on the passport you hold. Some nationalities enter visa-free for short stays, many apply online in advance, and others must go through a consulate. Check the official Turkish government portal for your own nationality before booking anything, since the categories change and the requirement is yours to meet, not your airline's to fix at the gate. Your itinerary states what is arranged on the ground once you arrive.
