What The Witness is
The Witness is one of six travel typologies named at the end of the Soul Compass. It describes someone who travels to observe.
They are the quietest person on the trip and usually the one who saw the most.
How you move
You notice what others walk past: how a shop is run, what people do at the end of the day, what gets repaired instead of replaced. You will choose a bench over a tour, and an ordinary neighbourhood over a landmark.
You don’t need to be entertained and you don’t need company for it. Give you an unplanned afternoon and you will come back with more than the guided group did.
What your journey is built around
Your journey is built around position and timing rather than attractions. Where you stand, and when you stand there, is the whole thing.
That means early markets, evening squares, working districts, and the hours either side of the ones a tour would choose. Neighbourhoods are picked for daily life rather than views. Long unstructured stretches are left in on purpose, because being scheduled is precisely what would stop you doing what you came to do.
A place tells the truth about itself at the hours most visitors are not awake for.
